Why Your Circuit Breaker Keeps Tripping
A breaker that keeps tripping is usually an overloaded circuit, a short circuit, a ground fault, or a failing breaker. Here is how to tell them apart.
A circuit breaker that keeps tripping is doing its job. The four common causes are an overloaded circuit, a short circuit, a ground fault, and a worn-out breaker. Repeated tripping should be diagnosed by a licensed electrician.
Overloaded circuit
Too many devices on one circuit draw more current than the wiring is rated for. Unplug items, reset the breaker, and reintroduce loads one at a time. If it holds until a specific appliance is plugged in, the circuit is overloaded or that appliance is faulty.
Short circuit and ground fault
A short circuit trips instantly and often leaves a scorch mark or burning smell. A ground fault trips GFCI protection, typically in damp locations. Both require inspection.
When to call an electrician
Call immediately if you smell burning, the breaker will not reset, the panel is warm, or the main breaker trips.
