Signs You Need an Electrical Panel Upgrade
Tripping breakers, a fuse box, warm panel covers and no room for new circuits are all signs your electrical panel needs an upgrade.
You likely need an electrical panel upgrade if you still have a fuse box, breakers trip repeatedly, the panel is warm or buzzing, there are no open breaker slots, or you are adding EV charging, central air or a heat pump.
Warning signs
- A fuse box instead of circuit breakers
- Breakers that trip repeatedly under normal use
- Lights that dim when appliances start
- A warm panel cover, buzzing or a burning smell
- Scorch marks or rust inside the panel
- No open slots for new circuits
- Recalled panel brands such as Federal Pacific or Zinsco
Why it matters
An overloaded or failing panel is one of the most common sources of residential electrical fires. Modern panels also add whole-home surge protection and AFCI breakers that detect arcing before it ignites.
