GFCI vs AFCI Explained
GFCI protection prevents electric shock, while AFCI protection prevents fires caused by arcing. Modern code requires both in different locations.
A GFCI protects people from electric shock by detecting current leaking to ground. An AFCI protects property from fire by detecting dangerous arcing in wiring. They solve different problems and are required in different areas of a home.

Where AFCI protection is required
AFCI protection is generally required for most living-area circuits including bedrooms, living rooms, hallways and dens. Dual-function breakers provide both types of protection on one circuit.
